Facilitating merger
We facilitated the merger of hospitals and physician practices.
Challenge:
Several physician practices were located throughout a rural community with two central hospitals. They needed to find a way to get 16 physician practices to join a common practice. Not only that, they needed to make all critical business and facility decisions in less than one month. They wanted to design and move into a new “next generation” health care facility to better serve the community and reduce increasing costs and risks.
Effort:
Clearpath people first interviewed key influencers in the region to learn goals, issues, practice issues, and pains. We conducted various workshops with physician leadership and administrative staff. From these interactions, we developed a comprehensive framework to represent all shared perspectives. We were able to clarify all primary practice and facility requirements, create a spirit of focus and cooperation, and detail the plans for a merger.
Result:
Over 70 major facility-critical decisions were made in less than a month including primary categories of: Staffing, Growth, Specialties, Scheduling & Utilization, Ancillary services, Urgent Care, Storage & Handling, New Education Services, etc. Sixteen physician leaders agreed on an overall strategic plan and business plan. Two local hospitals decided to fund the new building project. Their involvement in this teaming process caused them to decide on a merger after over 80 years of intense competition.
“We were able to make 70 orderly decisions in less than three days. Wow, I never thought it would be possible. It will strategically change how we practice, work with the hospitals, and service the community” - 16 Physician Practice leaders, owners
